Amelia Earhart Did Not Live in Bend

But her husband, George Putnam, did. George moved to Bend in 1909 and quickly become a city mover and a shaker. He was the editor and publisher of the Bend Bulletin and married Dorothy Binney (heiress of Crayola Crayons) in 1911 and became the town's youngest mayor in 1912. George later became a war correspondent and he worked in politics in Salem.

In 1919 George sold his Bend home and his interests in the Bend Bulletin and left Oregon, moving to New York where he worked in his family's publishing business (Putnam books), including publishing the autobiography of Charles Lindberg. It was here he also met Amelia Earhart, eventually becoming her publicist.

George and Dorothy divorced in 1929 following her affair with a man 19 years younger than her. George then became involved with A...

Built in 1930, the Empire State Building is one of the most memorable buildings in the world and is an iconic representative of New York City and Manhattan Island. The skyscraper has been the location of famous movies (i.e. King Kong), the office of many businesses and at one time, the tallest building in the world.

The 200 foot spire on the top of the 1050 foot tall building was placed, according to former New York State Governor Al Smith and the construction chairman of the building, to serve as a mooring mast for the docking of dirigibles with the argument that the closest port for these blimps was in Ocean County, NJ at the time.  However, many believe that the reason the spire was really placed was to top the 1046 foot tall Chrysler Building as the tallest building in the world.

If you have a chance to visit New York City, a stop at the Empire State Building is a must. Seein...

Did you know that brass doorknobs actually disinfect themselves?  It's called the "Oligodynamic Effect," and according to Wikipedia, "Brass doorknobs disinfect themselves in about 8 hours, while stainless steel and aluminum knobs never do."  Other metals including brass, copper, silver, and iron also have antimicrobial qualities and would be good choices, but brass is the most antimicrobial of them all.  This is one very big reason that you see not only homeowners, but also hospitals installing or switching to brass doorknobs, plumbing fixtures, and even light switches.

Can you imagine a building so tall that you could watch the sunset twice?  At the Burj Khalifa in Dubai you can watch the sunset at the base of the building, then take the elevator to the observation deck on level 148 (highest in the world) and watch the sunset all over again.  Of course it doesn't hurt that the elevators can wisk you to the to the observation deck at 1823 feet in less than a minute.  Currently the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa measures 2717 feet in height (828 meters), including 163 floors above ground, 58 elevators, a 304 room Armani hotel, 6 exclusive restaurants, and 900 residences. It took 6 years, 12,000 workers, and 22 million man hours to complete.  But despite all the amazing technology that went into this masterpiece, the exterior windows are still cleaned the old fashioned way... with a bucket of water and a squeegee.
