September in Central Oregon: Things to Do, See & Experience

September may be one of the best months of the year to experience Central Oregon. The days are often still warm and sunny, mornings become noticeably cooler, and the first touches of fall begin appearing in the high country. Summer crowds start to thin, but the calendar remains packed with live music, festivals, farmers markets and outdoor recreation.

For those of us who live here, September feels a little like having the best of both seasons at once. There is still plenty of summer left for hiking, biking, paddling and evenings outdoors, while cooler temperatures make it increasingly tempting to head into town for music, food and some of Central Oregon's favorite fall traditions.

Here are a few things worth putting on your calendar for September 2026.

Celebrate Bend's Local Music Scene at Bend Roots Revival

One of Bend's homegrown September traditions returns September 11–13. Bend Roots Revival brings live music to venues around Bend and is especially appealing because of its strong connection to the local music community. Visit Bend identifies this year's festival as a family-friendly event taking place September 11–13.

September is also the final stretch of Bend's outdoor concert season. The Hayden Homes Amphitheater calendar continues well into the month, with September performances including Foster the People on September 12 and Riley Green on September 18.

It is one of those uniquely Bend combinations: spend the day outside and still have time for live music as the sun goes down.

Enjoy the Harvest at a Central Oregon Farmers Market

September is an especially good time to visit one of our local farmers markets. The Bend Farmers Market continues on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Brooks Street Alley, bringing together Central Oregon farmers, ranchers and food producers.

In Sisters, the Sisters Farmers Market continues on Sundays at Fir Street Park, with more than 45 local vendors offering produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, specialty foods and locally made products.

This is the time of year when shopping locally can also become inspiration for dinner. Late-summer produce overlaps with the beginning of fall harvest season, making September an excellent month to see what Central Oregon growers have produced.

Welcome Fall at Bend Oktoberfest

Downtown Bend gets an early start on autumn with Bend Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 19, from 2 to 9 p.m. on the lawn of the Deschutes Historical Museum. Bend Oktoberfest has long been one of the community events we enjoy seeing return each fall. Bend Premier Real Estate even sponsored the event back in 2018.

The free community event includes live music, local food and craft beer along with some decidedly less serious competitions—stein holding, pretzel tossing and the ever-popular dog races. The Bark Bash portion of the event includes wiener dog races, bulldogs, corgis and a mutt show.

It is exactly the sort of event that makes downtown Bend feel less like a visitor destination and more like a community gathering place. 

Spend a September Day on the Trails

You don't need an organized event to enjoy one of Central Oregon's greatest September attractions.

This is a wonderful time to hike.

Cooler mornings can make longer trails much more comfortable than they were during the hottest part of summer, while the high country begins its transition toward fall. Depending on elevation and weather, subtle yellows and golds start appearing in mountain meadows and along the trails.

We were reminded of that ourselves on our September 8 hike into Jefferson Park. Clear skies, alpine lakes, the beginnings of fall color and tremendous views of Mt. Jefferson made it an extraordinary day in the mountains.

As always during late summer and early fall, check current trail, fire and smoke conditions before heading into the mountains. Visit Bend also recommends monitoring wildfire activity when planning September outdoor adventures.

Make a Weekend of the Sisters Folk Festival

For music lovers, one of Central Oregon's signature September events comes at the end of the month.

The 29th annual Sisters Folk Festival runs September 25–27, 2026, bringing more than 30 artists and seven venues to downtown Sisters. Performances range across folk, roots and related genres, with stages scattered throughout town rather than concentrated in a single festival venue.

That format is a big part of the festival's charm. Downtown Sisters becomes the festival, making it easy to combine music with restaurants, shops, galleries and time spent simply walking around town.

September 25 also coincides with the Sisters Arts Association's Fourth Friday Art Walk, giving visitors another reason to explore downtown galleries that weekend.

Take a September Trip to Sunriver

Bend and Sisters aren't the only communities celebrating the changing season.

The 2026 Sunriver Oktoberfest takes place September 25–26, with activities that include fun runs, a Saturday market, putt-putt golf and an Oktoberfest celebration with food, music, games and dancing.

Even without a scheduled event, September is an excellent time for a day in Sunriver. Cooler temperatures are ideal for biking the community's extensive paved pathways, walking along the Deschutes River or simply enjoying the transition from summer into fall.

Experience September at a Slower Pace

Not every great Central Oregon day needs an itinerary.

One of our favorite things about September is simply being outside when the season begins to change. Take a walk along the Deschutes River. Ride a bike through the Old Mill District. Spend an afternoon in Sisters. Have dinner outside while evenings are still warm enough to do it. Head into the Cascades for a hike before snow begins returning to the higher elevations.

That's part of what makes living in Central Oregon so special. The spectacular destinations get plenty of attention, but often it's the ability to enjoy these places on an ordinary September afternoon that reminds us why we chose to live here.

From live music and Oktoberfest celebrations to farmers markets and quiet days in the mountains, September offers an unusual combination of summer recreation and early fall atmosphere.
