After the coldest March in 100 years, yesterday we noticed the first flower of spring. This lone crocus has emerged and its purple bloom is brightening the dead yard.  While the grass is still yellow, there are signs of spring with buds appearing on the flowering trees and a hint of green in the yards of some Bend homes.

Take the Path Off the Green Lakes Trail to Find this Hidden Gem

We have hiked the Green Lakes trail into the Three Sisters Wilderness many times over the years we have lived in Central Oregon. Located off the Cascade Lakes Highway, the hike to Green Lakes is among the most popular in the Cascades and is well worth the experience; we have blogged about this hike in the past -  see our Green Lakes Blog. Bend Oktoberfest September 21-22

One of Bend's most unique fall festivals is Bend Oktoberfest celebrated in the middle of September. Besides being the main fundraiser for Downtown Bend, Bend Oktoberfest offers "great beer, delicious food, silly games and feats of strength."  Starting Friday, September 21 at 3:00 pm, the festival will include the Stein Hold Competition, the Chicken Hat Hunt, the Bend Beer Choir, the Tricycle Races and the most popular event - the Weiner Dog Race. Balloons Over Bend is a Fabulous Bend Oregon Festival

There are few more stunning sights than watching beautiful hot air balloons floating into the sky with the backdrop of the Central Oregon Cascades at sunrise. Starting this Friday, the annual Balloons Over Bend festival will run through Sunday offering exciting sunrise launches of the balloons, the Night Glow event Friday evening many fun activities for the whole family on Saturday.
