Located about an hour's drive south and east of Bend, Fort Rock, Oregon, is an interesting place to spend a day. Besides the fascinating geological formation of the Rock itself, the community has a wonderful collection of original homestead buildings and memorabilia which show what life for the people who lived here 100 years ago. For a $5.00 entrance fee, the Fort Rock Homestead Village is open to visitors to look around in the buildings, see the tools and household products that were used and those with good imaginations can visualize what life was like for these Oregon pioneers. The buildings include a one room school, a church (which can be used even now for weddings and memorial services), a general store, several homes and even an outhouse. A working windmill supplies water and a vegetable garden is growing which shows the type of vegetables favored by the original pioneers
Those who enjoy a good hike can walk the several paths at Fort Rock itself. This National Natural Landmark is an old tuff ring which used to be surrounded by a shallow sea. The jagged rock rises out of the high desert and from a distance resembles a fort.
