Sparks Lake Not Yet Ready for Visitors

Sparks Lake

Sparks Lake is one of our favorite Central Oregon places to take visitors to showcase why we love where we live.  Located off the Cascade Lakes Highway, the views of Broken Top and South Sister from the Ray Atkeson Memorial Trail are spectacular and the lake is usually filled with non-motorized boats and paddle boards during the summer months.  It is one of our favorite places to go, especially since the Ray Atkeson Memorial Trail is handicap accessible which makes it a fabulous place for us to take elderly parents.

We drove up to Sparks Lake today hoping to catch some mountain views between the clouds and late snow showers. However, the views did not come out and the weather remained cool and overcast.

Alder Springs

In all the years we have lived in Central Oregon, we have never hiked to Alder Springs. In fact, we didn't even know it existed until recently.  Flowing into lower Whychus Creek which starts at Broken Top and merges into the Deschutes River, Alder Springs is an oasis in the midst of the High Desert.

There are two trail heads you can drive to in order to begin your hike to Alder Springs.  Both trail heads have sketchy 4 wheel drive dirt roads which is probably why few take these hikes. We took the least rough road located out of Sisters to our trail head which resulted in a longer 3.8 mile hike one direction bordering Whychus Creek much of the way.  We saw no one on this hike until we reached Alder Springs and at times the trail was hard to find.

Fast Flowing River, Springs and Easy Walk

Metolius River Hike

We have lived in Central Oregon since 1985.  During this time we have never hiked the Metolius River until this weekend. The day was overcast and light rain came and went. When we started the hike, we only saw one person for the first 2 miles - a fisherman casting his line in a quiet place on the river.

We started our hike at the Canyon Creek Campgound at the West Metolius Trailhead and followed the river downstream over 2.5 miles until we reached the Wizard Falls fish hatchery.  The hatchery was closed due to Covid-19 and the bridge over the river was blocked. However, since we were on the hatchery side of the river, we walked on the bridge to view the beautiful blue water of Wizard Falls before

With Oregon State Parks Closed, Try Something Different

Gray Butte

Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Central Oregon five weeks ago, we have been looking for places to hike which are still fairly easy to access yet not subject to closure restrictions. This weekend we found Gray Butte.  Every Central Oregonian knows iconic Smith Rock with its fabulous rock formations and the destination of many rock climbers from around the world. We have often hiked in this state park and enjoyed watching those climbing and rappelling down Monkey Face or the other cliffs many times. We have climbed Misery Ridge and enjoyed hiking many of the trails as well. One path we have never hiked before, however, is the looming Gray Butte immediately to the east of Smith Rock - although we

Steins Pillar Trail Little Traveled Early April 2020

Steins Pillar TrailWe have focused most of our hikes in the Cascades during our time living in Central Oregon.  However, the Ochocos, east of Prinveille, offer wonderful, less traveled hikes with beautiful vistas and interesting geology.

We traveled an hour out of Bend to find the Steins Pillar trailhead, traveling at the end first on a gravel road for several miles and then a single lane dirt road the last two miles.  When we arrived at 10:00 am, there was no one else there and we enjoyed our two mile hike into the Steins Pillar without seeing any other people. The hike had a few icy sections and patches of snow were still evident on more shaded areas, but the end of the hike being able to see Steins Pillar was

Pronghorn Resort Offers New Lodging Options

Hunting Lodge in Pronghorn

Huntington Lodge, Pronghorn's long anticipated newest overnight lodging option, is opening soon. We were fortunate to experience the 104 room lodge prior to its grand opening in an invitation only soft opening as they work out the bugs.

The windy road to Pronghorn off Powell Butte Hwy ends at the Pronghorn gate house were we were greeted by the gate house attendant who asked where we were going. Obviously he notified Huntington Lodge as the two check in attendants  greeted by name as we walked in the door.  The main entry at the lodge is spacious with check in immediately to the right and concierge services to the left (the concierge was not staffed but we are sure they will be active during peak

Bend Commercial Real Estate Impacted by Lack of Inventory

Historically, our local commercial real estate market trends above the national averages. Our Central Oregon area commands very aggressive CAP rates due to supply and demand; when you put a magnifying glass to our market, we have very little Industrial property For Sale/For Lease and it would appear that the Urban Growth Boundary expansion recently passed will not solve this immediate problem. Our local market in most cases this year has positive absorption rates for office and retail as well. Commercial Market Conditions

What’s Up on the National Front?

Our local commercial real estate market trends about a year behind what we experience in the residential market. This is consistently true and while residential

Redmond OR Home Prices Continue to RiseRedmond Oregon

Redmond has historically been a more affordable option for people moving to Central Oregon. Home and land prices in this vibrant town have remained lower than those in Bend, and with the commute between the two communities less than 20 minutes, Redmond has often been a first choice for many relocating to our area.

However, the growth in Central Oregon has pushed single family residential home prices in Redmond higher since coming out of the recession in 2012. In fact, over the past five years, home prices in Redmond have doubled with the average sold price now over $300,000.

When single family residential Redmond home trends are compared between 2016 and 2017, the following statistics can be seen:
