Prineville CourthouseThe oldest community in Central Oregon, Prineville has somehow managed to maintain a sense of heritage while keeping the doors open to new frontiers. Once a farming and timber town and built on the back of Les Schwab Tires, more recent additions to Prineville have included data centers for Facebook in 2010 and Apple in 2013 - both with plans for major expansions in the near future.

Why do people choose to relocate to Prineville? Many like the dry climate of the high desert with warmer days and cool nights. Another major reason is that Prineville has among the lowest median home prices in the region with options in housing including everything from newer subdivisions, large luxury homes, and large acreage farms/ranches. Like much of Central Oregon, Prineville also has an abundance of recreational opportunities with quick access to the Ochoco National forest and nearby reservoirs. No matter what the season, Prineville has a lot to offer.

Popular Neighborhoods in Prineville, Oregon

For those loving the slower paced lifestyle found in a small town atmosphere, Prineville may be the spot for you with a variety of neighborhoods offering different lifestyle options. Indian Rock Estates and Longhorn Ridge offer 5 acre home sites and are located near BLM land; they have nice homes and plenty of room for horses and privacy. IronHorse is another popular Prineville neighborhood located next to Barnes Butte and is the site of a former working ranch. Property owners don’t have to be in a designated Prineville neighborhood to find many 20+ acre properties with no CC&Rs or HOAs allowing for freedom to do whatever you wish with your land and time. Buyers looking for some land but wanting to live closer to town may find the West Hills appealing. This area of Prineville tends to have nice homes on at least an acre with some views while still having the convenience of being close to downtown. But if affordability is your goal, nearly all of Prineville offers comparatively affordable properties, with some real bargains found in the downtown area itself for those looking for a mid-century in need of a little love.

Prineville Area Schools

Prineville is part of the Crook County School District. This district has seven schools with about 3,200 students. There is one high school, one alternative high school, one middle school, three in town elementary schools, and one rural elementary school. There are also two additional charter schools sponsored by the district including one online K-12 school. There are 108 full and part-time classroom teachers between these seven schools and 47 full and part-time administrative staff. High school test scores ranked higher than the state averages for math, English and science while middle school was about even with the average.
