Black Butte Ranch is steeped in history first as a campsite for early American migration to the west, later as part of the Santiam Wagon Road, and then as a cattle and horse ranch. The property changed hands several times until Brooks Resources purchased the ranch in 1970. As Brooks developed the ranch, they also came up with the idea of helping to renovate the town of Sisters with an 1880's theme and offered each merchant architectural support and $5000 to complete the façade we see today. Today the ranch is a major destination resort with many lodging options, a full service day spa, fitness center, two 18-hole championship golf courses, 19 tennis courts, five swimming pools, three restaurants, shops, and a general store. Right next to the ranch is the 1.6 million acre Deschutes National Forest with even more activities to enjoy, such as fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, winter skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing.
